The protest, organized by the National Socialist Network (NSN), displayed a banner with an alarming message: "Abolish the Jewish lobby." Unmasking the Protesters
Among the protesters, one man stood out. Matthew Gruter, who relocated from South Africa to Australia in 2022, was photographed in the front row. An online profile suggests he works for Aurecon, a multinational design and engineering firm, as a senior civil engineer specializing in water and wastewater. When contacted, Aurecon stated they were investigating the matter but did not confirm Mr. Gruter's employment.
Mr. Gruter's wife's online presence hints at his visa status, suggesting he moved to Australia with sponsorship from an Australian business.
Verifying Mr. Gruter's Identity
Photographs of Mr. Gruter at the protest show him wearing a silver bracelet engraved with the words "blood and honour," a phrase associated with the Hitler Youth. This phrase was also repeatedly shouted during the rally. ABC NEWS Verify, with the help of anti-fascist researchers from the White Rose Society, matched Mr. Gruter's protest photos with other social media images. The evidence is compelling: the sunglasses, the Helly Hansen jacket popular among NSN members, and even a tattoo in Hebrew script.
When confronted, Mr. Gruter denied his presence at the protest. However, his response to questions about the bracelet was telling: "Since when is it a crime to love and advocate for your own people?"
The Changing Tactics of the Far Right
Kaz Ross, an independent researcher studying the far right, highlights the evolution of recruitment tactics. She explains, "The old-school [Nazi] image was like 'Romper Stomper.' You might organize, train, and build numbers, hoping to recruit later. But now, they're going after anyone, regardless of social status, and they believe their success is guaranteed."
Other Identified Protesters
Another protester, Dean Alessi, was identified through social media photos. Mr. Alessi, a race car enthusiast, confirmed his presence at the protest and his affiliation with NSN, which he described as "White Australia." Both Mr. Gruter and Mr. Alessi were photographed at the March for Australia rally on August 31, standing among NSN members.
Additionally, Oscar Tuckfield, known for his involvement in a far-right plot to influence the Young Nationals, was present at both the NSW Parliament protest and the March for Australia rally.
The Controversy
But here's where it gets controversial: the March for Australia chief organizer has denied any knowledge of NSN's involvement with the event's marshals. This raises questions about the organizers' awareness and potential complicity.
