Top College Football Teams 2025: Reacting to A to Z's Latest Top 25 Rankings (2025)

College Football’s Top Teams: Who’s Really Dominating Right Now? Week 6 has shaken up the college football landscape more than any other point in the season, leaving fans—and rankings—in a whirlwind. Several surprising upsets pushed some teams completely out of the Top 25, while a few powerhouses delivered commanding wins that clarified who actually belongs in the title conversation. But here’s where it gets controversial: not all rankings agree on who’s truly the best, and our A to Z Sports staff aims to cut through the noise with their own carefully crafted Top 25 list.

Every week, the knowledgeable crew at A to Z Sports evaluates and ranks the nation’s best teams, offering a fresh perspective to counterbalance the often erratic polls you might find elsewhere. Let’s dive deeper into four teams that made the biggest waves in this latest ranking update.

Miami — #2

"Miami exemplifies what it means to be a top contender. They’ve not only passed the toughest eye tests but also built an unmatched resume. With wins against heavyweights like Notre Dame, USF, Florida, and Florida State, their season so far is nothing short of exceptional," says Craig Smith.

Smith captures Miami’s essence perfectly—the Hurricanes have shown impressive control and consistency in every matchup. What really sets this team apart is their versatility: they can win by pounding the ground game or air it out when necessary. Take the Florida State game, for example, where Carson Beck and Malachi Toney stepped up big when the rushing attack wasn’t clicking. Personally, I have Miami at the very top spot—#1—but I understand why some might slot them second, especially given the talent Ohio State boasts. This debate alone is worth following.

Alabama — #7

Travis May expresses his frustration vividly: "I was really torn where to place Alabama. Fourth? Fifth? Sixth? I landed at sixth, tied with Oklahoma and Texas A&M just outside the top three. But the AP Poll still penalizes Alabama heavily for that early loss to Florida State, which boggles my mind. This Crimson Tide team is almost unrecognizable from Week 1 — largely thanks to the breakout season from quarterback Ty Simpson and a defense that disrupts offenses relentlessly. They've crushed Vanderbilt and Wisconsin, and even ended Georgia’s 30-plus game home winning streak. Yet AP barely gives them a top-ten spot? That’s simply ridiculous."

This disconnect highlights why the A to Z ranking demands attention: it gives credit where it’s overdue. While ranked at #7 by A to Z, I personally could argue Alabama belongs in the top four, especially considering Ty Simpson’s electrifying Heisman-caliber plays that keep Alabama competitive every game. Their true test comes this weekend against Missouri on the road, which could prove if this punchy ranking is too modest.

Texas — #22

Destin Adams admits, "Deciding the fate of teams like Texas and Penn State this week was tough. Both teams delivered shockingly poor performances that tarnished their resumes. Texas stumbled against Florida, a team on a three-game losing streak playing uninspired football. The AP dropped Texas out of the Top 25 entirely, and honestly, I wish I could have done that here too to hold them accountable. But here’s the dilemma: if I’m ranking the top 25 based on who truly belongs there, Texas’s performance against Ohio State — making them sweat more than anyone else this season — has to count for something."

I share Adams’s conflicted view on the disappointment of Week 6’s inexplicable losses. Texas’s defeat, while redeemable due to Florida’s respectable roster, still raises eyebrows. Frankly, I lean against Texas remaining in the Top 25 and propose Florida take their spot, especially if LSU and USF win their upcoming games. Florida’s resume could look much stronger than most expect, particularly if they can continue to surprise teams under Billy Napier’s leadership.

Texas’s predicament is clear: despite having talent that should place them among the elite, their lack of Power Four wins so far is glaring. Should they lose to Oklahoma this weekend, their College Football Playoff hopes will dwindle to nothing. Talent alone isn’t enough—on-field results must justify rankings.

Penn State — #23

Brandon Little observes, "Penn State has now dropped two games in a row after starting the season ranked #2. They began with a stacked roster, but things haven’t clicked—especially evident in their humbling loss to UCLA. Drew Allar hasn't progressed as hoped, and James Franklin still struggles against top-tier opponents. Despite that, I firmly believe Penn State remains a top-20 team and will likely lose only one more game, probably to Ohio State on November 1st."

Penn State might be the toughest team to evaluate. Little nails it: while the talent is undeniably there, their underperformance is baffling. The UCLA loss was a major outlier, likely caused by distractions off the field. Looking forward, this team seems mentally fragile against upcoming challenges like Indiana and Ohio State. Like Texas, Penn State hasn’t secured a Power Four win yet, a glaring omission that should impact their ranking until they improve in conference play.
