The R4 series promises to tackle some of the biggest hurdles facing growers today, including the scarcity of skilled labor and the ever-increasing pressure to adopt sustainable farming practices. But here's where it gets controversial... Can robots truly replace human expertise in the delicate art of farming?

Thierry Le Briquer, Grape, Olive & Coffee Global Manager at New Holland, puts it this way: "High-value crops present immense market opportunities, but growers are struggling with production challenges. One significant issue is the lack of skilled labor, especially for repetitive tasks during peak seasons." The R4 robots are designed to automate these recurring tasks, boosting efficiency and promoting sustainability with a zero-emission solution. Think about it: no more exhaust fumes polluting your precious crops!

The brains behind the R4 series come from the CNH R&D Centre in Modena, Italy, and the New Holland Centre of Excellence for Specialty Harvesting in Coëx, France. This global team of engineers set out to free up skilled human workers, allowing them to focus on the tasks that truly require their expertise and judgment. The R4 robots excel at repetitive, low-value tasks where human presence isn't essential for accurate and safe operation – things like mowing between rows or tilling the soil. And this is the part most people miss... The robots are also programmed to handle some of the most time-consuming tasks in vineyards and orchards, such as spraying crops with precision.

These smart machines are managed via a user-friendly app and navigate using a combination of GPS, LIDAR (a laser-based scanning technology), and sophisticated vision cameras. It's like giving your farm a pair of high-tech eyes and ears!

"R4 is a completely new concept – it doesn't have a cab," Le Briquer emphasizes. "It's been designed from the ground up, yet it's built on our established foundation and leverages our expertise in electronics, powertrains, and precision technology. It's the latest addition to our product family, joining tractors, grape harvesters, and other machines." What makes the R4 even more impressive is that it uses the same autonomous technology and components that New Holland has developed for its broader range of crop platforms. This highlights the scalability and adaptability of their solutions. The R4 integrates seamlessly into the existing product ecosystem, sharing systems like FieldOps and the same autonomy platform used across both cash crop and specialty machines. This commonality makes it easy to upgrade and ensures long-term support.

Two Flavors of R4: Electric and Hybrid

New Holland offers two versions of the R4 autonomous machine, each tailored to specific needs. Both versions feature suspended rubber tracks to maximize traction and minimize soil compaction – a crucial factor for healthy crops. They also incorporate an intelligent, continuously variable electric drivetrain. This allows them to power implements electrically, eliminating the need for hydraulic oil and reducing maintenance, weight, emissions, cost, and soil compaction. Crucially, both machines are compatible with existing implements, meaning farmers don't have to replace all their equipment.

The R4 Electric Power is primarily aimed at high-end, narrow vineyards. It's powered entirely by a 40kWh battery pack, offering a zero-emission solution ideal for environmentally conscious growers. With a maximum height of 1.38 meters and a width of just 0.7 meters, it can navigate rows spaced as closely as 1.0-1.5 meters. The Electric Power version weighs just one tonne and features a custom-designed, ultra-compact hitch with a 500kg lift capacity. It can also power electrically driven implements, offering even greater versatility.

The R4 Hybrid Power, the larger model, is designed for orchards and fruit producers, offering greater power and extended autonomy. Its power-to-weight ratio is twice that of a conventional specialty tractor with similar output. Weighing 1,400kg and measuring 1.2 meters wide, it's optimized for row spacings of 1.5 meters and above. Its double-pass capability ensures complete coverage, allowing it to operate efficiently in large orchards without missing any spots. Power comes from a 59hp/44kW diesel engine that can run on vegetable oil-based fuels, reducing emissions. This engine drives an electric generator pack for transmission and implement power. When conditions are favorable, the R4 Hybrid Power can operate in fully electric mode, with two 4kWh batteries providing zero-emission and quiet operation. The electrically powered Cat I/II hitch is maintenance-free. A mechanical 540rpm PTO (Power Take-Off) with intelligent progressive clutching works with standard implements, and a 48V/12kW e-PTO socket can power future electrically driven machines.

Smarter Implements, Safer Operation

New Holland has also developed intelligent electrical implement management functions to enhance operator safety and further minimize environmental impact. For example, intelligent spraying technology automates flow rate control and incorporates both headland management and canopy gap on/off switching. It can also automate spraying based on canopy height, ensuring efficient and targeted application. Furthermore, New Holland is actively developing a system for spot spraying based on disease detection. Imagine the possibilities!
