Mitsubishi Heavy Industries (MHI) takes a giant leap towards revolutionizing logistics with a groundbreaking joint demonstration alongside Kirin Group. But here's the catch: they're tackling the critical issues of operator shortages and regulatory changes head-on with automation!
MHI and Kirin Beverage Co., Ltd. & Kirin Group Logistics Co., Ltd. have successfully completed a demonstration to automate warehouse operations and truck loading/unloading. The project, initiated in August 2024, took place at MHI's co-creation space in Yokohama and Kirin Group Logistics' facilities.
The star of the show? A cutting-edge unmanned forklift equipped with MHI's ΣSynX technology, part of the 'Smart Connections' suite. This technology aims to streamline autonomous operations and ensure safe human-machine collaboration. The demonstration focused on establishing processes for flexible load assortment, adaptive route changes, and efficient storage methods.
The results are in: MHI has successfully mapped out the automation of the entire cargo handling process, from unloading to loading trucks, and verified its effectiveness at real-world logistics facilities. They categorized warehouse work into picking, inbound/outbound processes, and truck loading/unloading, implementing ΣSynX for automation. An automated picking solution was already put into action at Kirin Group's Ebina Logistics Center in December 2024.
Looking ahead, MHI is committed to refining its 'Smart Connections' solutions to address logistics challenges, including operator shortages and improved working conditions. But here's where it gets controversial: how will these advancements impact the workforce, and what are the ethical considerations?
