But here’s where it gets truly fascinating and a bit controversial: rescuers first mistook this life-saving sea turtle for an ordinary oil drum. In 1974, Candelaria Villanueva was one of 277 people aboard the Aloha ship that tragically caught fire and sank in the Sulu Sea, about 600 miles south of Manila, Philippines. As chaos unfolded and survivors fought to stay afloat, Candelaria found an unlikely ally—an enormous sea turtle that approached her in the water. According to a 51-year-old report from United Press International, she managed to climb atop the turtle’s shell, using it as a makeshift raft to stay afloat in the vast ocean.
Remarkably, she remained balanced on the turtle for nearly 48 hours until rescue came. When the Philippine Navy’s vessel, the RPS Kalantia, spotted her on June 4, 1974, the crew initially thought she was holding onto an oil drum. It was only upon closer approach and pulling her aboard that they realized the ‘‘oil drum’’ was actually a giant sea turtle supporting her from beneath.
Lieutenant Cesario F. Mana, who witnessed the rescue firsthand, expressed his astonishment, saying he wouldn’t have believed the story if he hadn’t seen it himself. He recalled that the instant the woman switched her grip from the turtle to a life ring thrown by the rescuers, the turtle quietly slipped beneath the water and disappeared.
