Children in Need 2025: A Heartwarming Success Story, Raising Over £45 Million!
That's right, the annual Children in Need appeal has once again proven the incredible generosity of the UK, surpassing £45 million to support children and young people across the nation. The live show, broadcast on BBC One from Salford, was a vibrant display of entertainment and fundraising, hosted by a stellar lineup including Paddy McGuinness, Mel Giedroyc, Lenny Rush, Rochelle Humes, Vernon Kay, and Big Zuu.
The night was filled with engaging sketches and performances, including appearances from stars of Gladiators and The Apprentice, as well as dazzling routines from Strictly Come Dancing professionals. Musical highlights were provided by the likes of Lewis Capaldi, McFly's Tom Fletcher and his son Buzz, and Eurovision contestants Remember Monday.
But here's where it gets controversial... the final total of £45,507,536 was announced at the end of the three-hour show. A significant portion of this impressive sum, over £9.5 million, was raised by Radio 2 DJ Sara Cox, who undertook an extraordinary challenge.
Cox's incredible feat involved running five marathons in five days, covering a staggering 135 miles across northern England. She finished, fittingly, in Pudsey. Reflecting on her experience, Cox shared with fellow Radio 2 DJ Scott Mills that it was the 'maddest, most painful, wonderful thing I've ever, ever done.' She humorously added, 'I've never had shapely calves in my life, but I have now because they are so swollen, it looks like I've been hit with a bat.'
During the appeal show, Cox described the experience as a 'rollercoaster,' with her mood changing every few seconds. She admitted to being 'absolutely exhausted' but emphasized that it had been 'the most amazing, painful and wonderful few days of my life.'
A Fun Twist: The Apprentice and Pudsey
The show also featured a humorous skit involving The Apprentice, where Lord Sugar found himself on the receiving end of a grilling from a group of children. He explained that he 'owed a favour to Pudsey,' allowing the children to ask pointed questions. Pudsey Bear, the iconic Children in Need mascot, and actor Lenny Rush, 16, also took on new BBC roles in a sketch, highlighting a children's takeover to put children at the heart of all BBC programming.
In another clip, Richard Madeley jokingly threatened to 'fire' Rush, adding to the lighthearted atmosphere of the evening. The show even reimagined Gladiators, with children taking on the roles of elite athletes in various challenges, though their size presented some comical obstacles.
More Than Just a Telethon
The live program also included a live workout led by fitness expert Joe Wicks, joined by Strictly dancers. Earlier in the week, Big Zuu collaborated with Pudsey Bear and children from a theatre project, funded by Children in Need, to present his first CBeebies Bedtime Story. The story, Basil Dreams Big, focused on resilience and self-belief. Big Zuu emphasized the importance of charities that support carers and parents, recognizing the crucial role of trusted adults in young people's lives.
Lenny Rush, hosting for his third year, expressed his favorite aspect of the show as the opportunity to hear inspiring stories. The BBC's daily news podcast, Newscast, also participated, with presenter Adam Fleming undertaking a 25-hour podcasting mission, featuring various BBC radio presenters and podcasters.
