A 3,300-year-old Canaanite 'tea set' has been unearthed near the ancient city of Armageddon in Israel, offering a fascinating glimpse into the religious and cultural practices of the time. The discovery includes a ram-shaped teapot, a dollhouse-sized temple, and one of the oldest known winepresses in the world.
The teapot, crafted in the shape of a ram, features a molded spout resembling a tilted ram's head, designed to spill liquid. This discovery highlights the significance of animals like sheep, donkeys, and goats in Canaanite culture, with evidence suggesting their import from Egypt for sacrificial purposes.
Archaeologists believe the teapot and bowls were buried as ritual offerings. The excavation, conducted near Megiddo (Armageddon) ahead of road construction in the Jezreel Valley, uncovered other Canaanite cult offerings, including storage jars and imported jugs from Cyprus. These artifacts were likely buried by local people, possibly farmers, at a rock outcrop that may have served as an outdoor altar.
The mini-temple, made of ceramic and 3,300 years old, provides a glimpse into the architecture of real temples during the Canaanite Late Bronze Age. Amir Golani, one of the IAA excavation directors, described it as a representation of what ancient temples might have looked like.
Megiddo has a rich history dating back to around 7000 B.C., with numerous battles fought there. The Book of Revelation predicts the final battle at the end of time will take place at this site. The excavation revealed artifacts from both the Early and Late Bronze Ages, showcasing the city's ancient urbanism and Canaanite worship.
One of the most surprising discoveries was a 5,000-year-old winepress, carved into the rock with a sloping surface for grape treading and a collection vat. This unique winepress provides conclusive proof of wine production in the region during the Early Bronze Age. The presence of residential buildings around the winepress suggests its importance to the community.
